How to Prepare Your Home for Flat Pack Delivery Day
Getting new furniture should feel exciting, not stressful. This simple guide shows how to get your home ready so delivery and assembly go smoothly.
Why preparation helps on delivery day
A bit of prep can save time, avoid damage and make the whole day feel calmer. It also helps your fitter work safely and efficiently.
Planning access is especially useful in homes with tight hallways and stairs.
Measure doors, halls and stairs
Before the furniture arrives, grab a tape measure. Check that both the boxes and the built item can get to the right room.
- Measure door widths, hallways, stair turns and low ceilings on the route from your front door.
- Compare with the product sizes on your order or retailer’s website.
If it looks tight, plan to build in the room or rethink the size or style.
Clear a safe space for assembly
Flat pack building is easier with a clear, open area. It protects both your home and the new furniture.
- Aim for space to lay the largest panel flat on the floor.
- Move breakables, side tables and floor lamps so the fitter can move around freely.
If the room is small, use a nearby room as a staging space for parts and packaging.
Protect floors and walls
A little protection goes a long way when large panels and tools are involved.
- Put clean blankets, cardboard or dust sheets on delicate floors.
- Add temporary protection to tight corners or bannisters if you are worried about scuffs.
This is especially helpful for big wardrobes, bunk beds and heavy drawer units.
Decide where everything will live
Knowing where each item will go speeds things up and avoids heavy lifting later.
- Mark out wardrobes, beds or bookcases with masking tape to check they fit and doors can open.
- Check access to windows, sockets and radiators so nothing important is blocked.
You will quickly see if you have chosen the right furniture for the space.
Organise boxes for the fitter
How boxes are placed can make the job much easier.
- Ask delivery drivers to put boxes close to the room each item will be built in.
- Keep each product’s boxes together and avoid opening them, so all parts stay with the right item.
This makes it simpler to check fixings and reduces the chance of missing pieces.
Keep pets and children safely away
Assembly involves tools, sharp fixings and heavy panels, so a calm space is safest.
- Keep pets in another room or with a family member while the work is done.
- Explain to children that the work area is off-limits until everything is finished and tidied.
Everyone can then enjoy the new furniture once it is safely in place.
Sort parking, access and timing
Good access outside helps everything start on time.
- Arrange visitor parking or permits if you live in a restricted zone.
- Make sure gates and communal entrances are open or easy to unlock at the appointment time.
Have your phone handy and any order details nearby so questions can be answered quickly.
Plan what to do with packaging
Flat pack means a lot of cardboard and wrapping.
- Check local recycling rules so you know how to break down and dispose of packaging.
- Decide whether you will handle it yourself or ask the fitter in advance to bundle it neatly.
Once the boxes are gone, you can enjoy your new furniture straight away. Please note, Flat Pack Dan cannot take away your packaging but we can separate the cardboard, making it easier for customers to recycle.
Quick checks before the fitter arrives
A final two-minute check keeps everything running smoothly.
- Make sure the route from the front door to the room is clear and well lit.
- Confirm the work area is tidy, pets are secure, and any special requests are ready to mention.
With a little preparation, your flat pack delivery day will feel relaxed, organised and far less stressful.
